Title Static charge development and impact sensitivity of high explosives
Bibliographic information 1993, Vol.34, No.3, p.385-391. Illus. 28 ref.
Abstract The development of static electric charge as result of compression of single crystals was measured for pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), trinitrotoluene (TNT), N,2,4,6 tetranitro-N-methylaniline (tetryl) and cyclotrimethylene trinitroamine (RDX). Their electrical and mechanical properties are tabulated. The charge developed by a given explosive at a given pressure was correlated with its impact sensitivity. Although the mechanism of charge development in PETN and TNT is different in detail from that in tetryl and RDX, all four form soft crystals of low symmetry, and have low dielectric constants and high compressibility. Their high resistivity enables them to develop electrostatic charges.
