Abstract Major issues relating to noise exposure evaluation, hearing protection and, in particular, engineering noise control research within the UK coalmining industry are discussed. Problems in the accurate assessment of individual noise exposures and the provision of suitable hearing protection are addressed in the context of European legislation concerning noise at work. Noise control research shows that significant noise reductions can be achieved on mining machinery. Studies of noise levels of various types of machine are summarised (roadheading machines, gearboxes, drills, railed manriding sets) along with resulting noise reductions.
