Abstract This report reviews the environmental and toxicological data on methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE). Data on the toxicity of MTBE to humans are restricted to case reports of mild adverse effects (nausea, vomiting, drowsiness) following its use in medical treatment. The acute toxicity of MTBE in experimental animals is low; data on chronic toxicity or carcinogenicity are not available. MTBE is not considered to be toxic as defined under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
