Title Exposure of sprayers and plant handlers to mevinphos in Finnish greenhouses
Bibliographic information Apr. 1993, Vol.54, No.4, p.150-157. Illus. 11 ref.
Abstract The exposure of sprayers and plant handlers to mevinphos, a toxic organophosphate insecticide, was evaluated in eight flower-growing greenhouses, in order to assess an appropriate re-entry interval after application. The method of application considerably affected the levels of mevinphos in greenhouse air and on the foliage. The Finnish occupational exposure limit for mevinphos (100µg/m3) was exceeded during the use of non-thermal foggers. Usually, however, the concentration in the breathing zone was below 10µg/m3 9-12h after application; the half-life was 9.2h. These data provide evidence that the main route of exposure is dermal, a conclusion supported by the excellent correlation between dermal exposure and the amount of mevinphos on the foliage. The calculated re-entry interval was approximately 4.5h. However, that interval is likely to be too short in practice because the risk of dermal exposure is considerable for more than 10h after application.
