Abstract Study of video recordings of the gestures of persons sitting or standing at simulated workstations showed the complex mechanisms that underlie dynamic anthropometric measurements. For example, reach distance does not depend only on the dimensions of the upper limb, but also on the dimensions of the trunk and the flexibility of many joints. Some 122 envelopes of movement are illustrated for the 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male (presumably European) body.
