Abstract Review of the available literature on the toxicology of diethyl ether. The substance has a very low acute toxicity in animals and humans. Direct exposure to concentrations of about 100,000ppm induces human anaesthesia, and about 15,000ppm is the lowest anaesthetic concentration. Human volunteers exposed to 200ppm claimed irritation of the nose but not of the throat or eyes. Prolonged contact with the liquid may cause skin or eye irritation.
