Abstract A survey of the literature relevant to the discussion of occupational exposure limits for ethyl ether is presented. The acute and chronic toxicity of ethyl ether is low, the principal routes of occupational exposure being inhalation and skin contact. The critical effect is irritation of the upper respiratory passages while long-term exposure to low concentrations may result in central nervous system disorders. It is a mild skin irritant and repeated exposures may cause dermatitis.
