Abstract This report is one of a series concerning blast loading on offshore structures. An overview of explosions in highly congested volumes is presented followed by a review of theoretical and experimental research relevant to the problem of predicting explosion over-pressures in most offshore modules. Since there is limited experimental data available which is directly relevant to the offshore problem and the predictive accuracy of theoretical models is also limited, design engineers should not rely on any single approach to explosion prediction.
