Abstract This report aims to give a systematic description and analysis of the motives, procedures and results of interventions by the Dutch Labour Inspectorate in enterprises. Attention is given to: background and description of the study (including discussion of a number of policy developments and previous studies in this field); procedures and motives of visits by Labour Inspectors; evaluation of health and safety problems; control measures. From the results of this study it can be concluded that the majority of enterprises where the Labour Inspectorate finds shortcomings with respect to the working environment take corrective measures relatively quickly. However, in many cases there is a lack of self-initiated activities in companies with respect to a structural approach in improving the working environment.
