Abstract This national code of practice addresses the hazards and risks of the use of ethylene oxide for sterilisation and fumigation, and the procedures recommended for its safe handling. It covers the responsibilities of employers and employees, compliance with the exposure standard, control measures, personal protective equipment, emergency procedures, first aid, maintenance, examination and testing of control measures, atmospheric monitoring and health surveillance. The accompanying guidance note covers health effects of ethylene oxide and conditions under which exposure may occur.
