Title Experience of health status surveillance of pesticide workers in Hungary
Bibliographic information Nov.-Dec. 1990, Vol.81, No.6, p.517-523. Illus. 18 ref.
Abstract Potential dermal exposure to pesticides was studied in 26 male workers. In addition, epidemiological studies were conducted in three south-eastern agricultural counties of Hungary, involving 189 men working with pesticides in plant protection, both indoors and in the fields, and 16 women in contact with these substances. There were no cases of acute poisoning, nor were there any alterations detected in routine clinical and laboratory tests. For early detection of hidden genetic damage, chromosome aberration tests were performed: the number of chromosome aberrations was higher due to increases of hypodiploid cells in the exposed subjects. The probability of chromosome damage was also demonstrated in the few women tested. In previous studies of immune function in some of the men, the immunological tests gave positive results. The importance of frequent screening of exposed workers is emphasised.
