Abstract The difficulty in the collection and interpretation of data in the study of the interaction between the occupational environment and reproduction is stressed and the methodological procedures for doing so are outlined. These include the study of exposure factors and of the existence of confounding factors dependent on occupation and social level, outcome of earlier pregnancies and other effects. Examples of studies are taken from the health professions, where there are exposures to anaesthetics and cytostatic drugs, the chemical industry, agriculture and offices equipped with computer terminals. A glossary is included.
