Abstract A hazard evaluation rationale developed for the particular purpose of the development of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships is described; hazard profiles are intended to be used solely for that purpose. A detailed explanation of the hazard evaluation steps is given along with a consideration of certain classes of chemicals (alcohols, halogenated compounds, phthalates, chlorinated paraffins, pesticides), mixtures under trade or generic names and substances containing mineral oil. A composite list of hazard profiles for a number of substances is included.
