Abstract In 18 vehicle repairmen and 14 vehicle inspectors the levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-, m- and p-xylene in venuous blood were measured. Compared with the control group of 30 residents of a suburban area the vehicle repairmen had significantly elevated benzene and toluene concentrations. The vehicle inspectors, too, had elevated levels in comparison to the control group. All levels were below the limits valid in the Federal Republic of Germany.
