Abstract A recent study inferred that a reputed cluster of cases of leukaemia in children near the UK Sellafield nuclear facility was probably caused by occupational exposure of the father to ionising radiation at the plant. This paper raises the following objections to this hypothesis: the statistical argument ignores the difficulties raised by the temporal clustering of the cases and the apparent limitation to one village; ionising radiation is a general mutagen and there is no evidence of any other genetic effect at Sellafield; children of parents exposed to the Japanese nuclear explosions have shown no genetic effects and no increase in leukaemia or any other cancer.
