Abstract This guidance publication is intended to be used in the preparation of response plans for accidents involving radioactive materials used in medicine, industry, research and teaching. Contents: accident analysis and action levels (uses of radioactive materials and potential accidents, exposure pathways, criteria for setting action levels); protective measures; planning for an emergency response; procedures for implementation; medical aspects; public information; training and exercises; maintaining and updating emergency plans. Appendices include examples of accidents involving radioactive materials, a sample radiography contingency plan and a description of a mobile intervention unit.
