Title NIOSH Alert - Request for assistance in preventing lead poisoning in construction workers

Abstract This NIOSH Alert requests assistance in preventing the lead poisoning of workers engaged in the maintenance, repainting or demolition of bridges or other steel structures coated with lead-containing paints. Six case reports of lead poisoning are described. NIOSH recommendations for reducing lead exposure include: air monitoring; engineering controls; adequate personal hygiene practices; use of warning signs; personal protective equipment; medical surveillance; appropriate training.
