Abstract This criteria document surveys the available literature on the toxicology of aldicarb, a highly toxic pesticide. Accidental poisoning and a controlled laboratory study resulted in cholinergic symptoms including blurred vision, muscle weakness, nausea, dyspnoea and diarrhoea. Intoxication and poisoning due to occupational exposure are known to have occurred as a result of a neglect of recommended safety precautions. It is recommended that the handling and application of aldicarb should be undertaken by trained applicators and its use in agriculture should be restricted to situations where less hazardous substitutes are unavailable. A summary of the document is given in both French and Spanish.
