Abstract This guidance is intended primarily to cover working practices in clinical pathology laboratories, and supersedes that given in the Code of Practice for the prevention of infection in clinical laboratories and post-mortem rooms: the Howie Code, first published in 1978. Contents: duties of employers and employees under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (see CIS 74-2099); staff welfare and accommodation; safety guidelines for use in clinical laboratories; operation and maintenance of equipment; fire precautions. Appendices include a list of relevant British Standards, provisions of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulation 1988 (see CIS 89-1092), and guidance on the labelling, transport and reception of specimens.
