Abstract This workbook considers simple methods of estimating the dispersion of dense gases in the atmosphere and hence the consequences of accidents involving the release to the atmosphere of hazardous gases. Current knowledge is presented in a form which can be readily applied by non-specialists faced with meeting the requirements of regulations. Contents: scope and purpose of the workbook; information needs of the user; development of the workbook methods; influence of peripheral variables (surface roughness, atmospheric stability, source geometry, obstacles and buildings, relevance of topography, releases from elevated sources); examples in the use of the workbook and comparisons with experimental results; limitations of the workbook and identification of research needs.
