Abstract Article on infection control among workers in laboratories specialised in the detection of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Part I describes the risks (infection through inadvertent inhalation or ingestion of pathogens, contact with infected experimental animals, accidental self-inoculation with syringes), provides a table containing data on individual cases of infection (bacteria; fungi; viruses including HIV and Hepatitis A and B; parasitic organisms); suggested preventive methods (in particular, against Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Herpes virus and HIV (AIDS) virus); basic guidelines for safety in biomedical laboratories. Part II provides detailed information on proper methods of cleanliness, antisepsis, disinfection and sterilisation in order to reduce the likelihood of such infections.
