Abstract N-nitroso compounds are mutagenic, teratogenic, toxic and carcinogenic. N-nitroso compounds are very versatile and are potent chemical carcinogens. They induce tumours in a wide range of species and organs. Humans are exposed to N-nitroso compounds from endogenous formation and from environmental and occupational sources. Workers may be exposed to relatively high concentrations of N-nitroso compounds in certain industries, such as the metalworking industry, leather tanneries, and the rubber and tyre industry.
