Abstract Exposure to chemical contaminants in the atmosphere was evaluated on the premises of seven fertiliser manufacturers. The measurements concerned primarily hydrogen fluoride, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Overall results showed short-term exposure levels that were often in excess of short-term limit values (VLE in France, TLV-C or TLV-STEL in the US), particularly in the case of hydrogen fluoride, while long-term exposure limits (VME in France and TLV-TWA in the US) were generally respected, except in the case of superphosphate manufacture, where half the samples showed levels in excess of limit values.
