Abstract The increasingly devastating effects of HIV/AIDS on the working population confront governments and employers' and workers' organisations with an urgent need to devise and implement policies on HIV/AIDS and employment. The joint WHO/ILO Statement from the Consultation on AIDS and the Workplace now offers useful guidelines. The author explores how those guidelines reflect principles already established in ILO Conventions and Recommendations on the elimination of discrimination, protection in relation to termination of employment, special measures for the disabled, occupational health and safety and collective bargaining. She stresses the important role international standards can play in the search for a policy that is both reasonable and humane.
