Abstract The number of lost work days dropped from 5,690,865 in 1988 to 5,149,742 in 1989. There were also decreases in the numbers of occupational accidents (from 233,689 to 199,015) and diseases (from 5,158 to 4,258), but the number of fatalities rose from 433 to 527 (including deaths on the way to and from work). The figures are broken down by republic/autonomous province for 1988 and 1989. Activities of the labour inspectorate are also described.
