Abstract This document describes the hazards associated with the generation of potentially dangerous gases in manure pits. Case reports describe deaths from asphyxiation during 2 incidents involving entry into manure pits. Recommendations include ventilation of all manure pits, testing the atmosphere within a pit before entry and use of a safety belt or harness.
