Abstract Literature review of data on the identity of bis(chloromethyl)ether (BCME) and its toxicity in animals and man. Data on the acute toxic effects of BCME in man are sparse. It is highly irritating and corrosive to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract and can be fatal when inhaled. Several studies have clearly indicated an excess incidence of lung cancer among workers with potential occupational exposure to BCME. It is therefore considered to be a human carcinogen.
