Abstract Data on 100 factories submitted to the Central Statistical Bureau (GUS) of Poland by the State Labour Inspectorate show an aggregate 10% fall from 1985 to 1988 in the number of workers exposed to noise above official exposure levels. However, these levels vary from one group of enterprises to another (85-90dB(A) for various periods), and there are vast differences between enterprises within one sector in terms of the percentage of employees exposed to excessive noise. As the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy established a general noise exposure limit on 1 Dec. 1989 (85dB(A), 8h), it can be expected that the numbers of workers determined to be exposed to noise above the permissible level will show a substantial increase.
