Title The environmental health sciences: Building a faculty on basic principles
Bibliographic information Aug. 1990, Vol.2, No.2, p.1-8. Illus. 9 ref.
Abstract An account of the factors which influenced the development of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health within the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University. An environmental health sciences model was developed based on a definition of pollution drawn from systems analysis. This model was applied to academic development and divisional faculty recruitment. A description is given of three disciplines considered to form part of the basic sciences of public health: human population biology and the related concept of "metabolic epidemiology", systems ecology and technology assessment. Tables list recognised environmental health program areas and the disciplinary expertise needed for a comprehensive approach to environmental health sciences.
