Title Consensus Conference - Noise and hearing loss

Abstract Report on the discussions of the Consensus Development Conference on Noise and Hearing Loss (held 22-24 Jan. 1990). Discussed were: definition of and studies on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), most of which is due to occupational noise exposure; anatomic and physiologic correlates of NIHL; assessment of NIHL; sound levels that can damage hearing; factors influencing susceptibility to NIHL (anatomical differences, age, sex, exposure to ototoxic drugs); prevention strategies (individual protection, protection at and outside the workplace); directions for future research; conclusions and recommendations.
