Abstract This booklet provides general information on drug abuse at the workplace and suggests ways of overcoming the problem. An introductory chapter looks at the consequences, cost and extent of drug use in the workplace. A chapter explains the factors governing the intensity of effects, the path towards drug dependency, and the major functional effects and signs of use of a range of substances including alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, narcotics, hallucinogens, stimulants, barbiturates, solvents, tranquilisers. Final chapters discuss the need for a written drug policy and its implementation, and the legal aspects of drug control.
