Abstract These UNEP guidelines provide a general definition of hazardous wastes and outline considerations for the development of waste management strategies which minimise adverse effects. Objectives of hazardous waste management are discussed along with the need for an appropriate institutional framework. A chapter on physical management discusses "cradle-to-grave" management of waste, waste identification, handling and storage, and treatment and disposal techniques. Regulatory activities are outlined with reference to the establishment of a central agency to act as a clearing house for information and a regulating body for waste management.
