Abstract Electroencephalographic (EEG) and electromyographic (EMG) changes were studied in workers operating ultrasonic non-destructive testing equipment. EEG data for 129 operators (4 men and 125 women, aged 19-47 years with exposure histories of 2 to 20yrs) displaying symptoms of vegetative hand polyneuritis showed the percentage of operators with EEG changes to range from 57 to 87% depending on length of exposure (length of service up to 8yrs). Stimulant and local electromyography demonstrated objectively the existence of vegetative hand polyneuritis in non-destructive testing equipment operators, while revealing in some of them disturbances of motor function control. Comparative analysis of the EEG and EMG data suggested that the observed deviations in various EMG parameters, symptoms of hand polyneuritis, and functional cerebral disorders developed independently of each other.
