Abstract Review of the various actions taken by Swedish government authorities in order to control exposure of man and of the environment to cadmium. The author also provides a background to these actions in terms of information which provided the justification for control, given the social and political pressures existing at that time. Finally, attempts have been made to assess the impact of the regulations and some general conclusions from the experience derived from large scale chemicals management are also presented.
