Abstract Two groups of house painters exposed to solvent-based and water-based paints were examined with respect to health, renal function, nervous system function and some haematological parameters. The painters were compared to a non-exposed reference group of brick-layers. The group most exposed to solvent-based paints displayed signs of peripheral nervous system impairment which was not noted in the group most exposed to water-based paints. Some effects on renal function were found in the two painter groups, similar to those previously reported for other solvent exposure. Haematological examinations showed some but not similar effects in the two painter groups. The difference might be due to differences in exposure between the two groups.
