Abstract This document provides guidance on the arrangements which should be made between a principal and his contractors to enable them to understand their responsibilities to each other and to their employees when defining their safety obligations. It deals principally with requirements designed to protect the health and safety of people, but also considers measures which affect the safety of the workplace. Content: scope; definitions; legal requirements; selection and assessment of contractors (overview of the selection of contractors; assessment of management attitude and health and safety performance and policy; liaisons with tenderers); preparation of a contract (responsibilities of each party; conditions of contract; general matters of contract); control of contractors' activities (responsibilities; safety audits; exchange of information; training of contractors; specialist contract work); subcontractors.
