Abstract Previous studies have shown that an average exposure of 0.06mg Co/m3 may have both an acute and a chronic (mainly obstructive) effect on pulmonary function. Pulmonary function in 27 workers exposed to cobalt and 19 non-exposed controls from the same enterprise was determined in a 5-year follow-up study. The mean exposure to cobalt decreased from 0.08mg/m3 to 0.03mg/m3 during the period of study as a result of environment improvement measures. However, additional impairment of pulmonary function still occurred in smokers exposed to cobalt. Annual impairment in FEV1.0 amounted to 44mL/year in addition to the normal age-related impairment.
