Abstract Report of a test of two standard outfits with and without raincoats and two new prototype garments made of a new material, Gore-Tex. This new material is not permeable to liquid water, but it allows water vapour to pass through. Insulation was about the same for all suit combinations, but the vapour resistance was twice as large for standard garments with raincoat than for the other outfits. The Gore-Tex material had almost the same low water-vapour resistance as the standard suit, and can therefore be used over a wider temperature range than suits with raincoats.
