Title Occupational stresses on women engaged in making beedi

Abstract This is a report on an occupational health survey of 178 Indian women (age range: 15-59 years) engaged in the manufacture of beedi (indigenous cigarettes). Stresses imposed by the work include exposure to nicotine in pulverised tobacco, long work days (9-10 hours), postural strain and undernourishment. Health complaints include: back and head-ache; pain in the neck, hands and legs; burning of the eyes; giddiness and nausea. Reproductive problems are reported on (miscarriages, sterility, still-births).
