Abstract A general survey of offshore oil drilling operations is followed by a survey of risks to which workers on these installations are exposed: fires and explosions; noise; toxic substances; heat stress; lack of reliable communications with the shore in the case of emergencies; hazardous transfer of supplies and workers; danger of collision with other vessels; accidents during the drilling itself; psychosocial aspects of offshore work; strange work schedules and shift hours; diving operations. Separate chapters are devoted to the control of these hazards and their consequences, to offshore health services and to total disaster evacuation procedures. Conclusions and recommendations of the meeting are summarised in 10 points. Annexes give: the content of the pre-employment examination; impediments to offshore employment; programme of the meeting; a list of participants.
