Title Analysis of mortality patterns in an area supplying tunnel workers away from home. Part 2. Mortality patterns among tunnel workers
Bibliographic information 1984, Vol.26, No.1, p.45-52. Illus. 45 ref.
Abstract Continuation of a study abstracted under CIS 84-1376. Death certificates of 418 men who died after the age of 30 in 1977 in the southern part of Oita Prefecture were examined. Career and life histories of 356 of the subjects were obtained by interviewing family members. The proportion of migrant tunel workers in the sample (73/356) was comparable to that in the population of the region as a whole, and the rate of pneumoconiosis showed that many affected tunnel workers returned home before dying. Excess deaths due to infective and parasitic diseases, tuberculosis and silicotuberculosis were found in the tunnel workers. The mean age at death was lower for the tunnel workers than for the others in the sample and for all Japanese males. A dose-response relation was observed between the proportional mortality ratio for silicotuberculosis in the tunnel workers and the duration of their tunnel work.
