Abstract Air inhaled during the handling of mouldy material may contain more than 109 microorganisms/m3 and cause alveolitis. Preventive measures include information about the hazards of inhaling mould dust and about correct preservation techniques. Simple supplementary preservation methods should be developed as well as better methods to store woodchips, sawdust and straw, to monitor moisture and temperature of stored material and to reduce exposure to dust. Research is needed on harmful components of microbial dust and on safe exposure levels. The significance of mycotoxins and endotoxins should be studied further. More technical experts are needed to co-operate with physicians in the rehabilitation of patients with alveolitis.
