Title HTLV-III infection among health care workers: Association with needle-stick injuries
Bibliographic information 18 Oct. 1985, Vol.254, No.15, p.2089-2093. 45 ref.
Abstract Serum samples from 359 hospital workers were tested for the presence of HTLV-III (AIDS) antibodies. Of the 23 subjects who were self-reported members of high-risk groups for AIDS, 6 were seropositive. There was 1 seropositive subject among the 42 workers parenterally exposed to AIDS patients, as well as 1 seropositive subject among the 294 other workers. Two further workers, excluded from the survey because of possible referral bias, were also seropositive. Analysis of the cases shows that HTLV-III infection due to puncture wounds from needles contaminated by use with AIDS patients may be possible. Measures to reduce such exposures are proposed.
