Abstract Description with cut-away drawings of an improved emergency respirator. The device contains potassium superoxide, which reacts with carbon dioxide in expired air to release oxygen. A canister containing the potassium superoxide is fitted with a breathing tube (nose clip attached), a breathing bag and shoulder straps. The device measures 135 by 256mm and weighs 3.1kg. It has a service life of at least 1.5 years. It provides protection for 50min if the wearer is active (escaping an accident) and for up to 300min if the wearer is a rest (awaiting rescue). The device can be used at ambient temperatures of -10 to +40°C, relative humidities up to 100% and atmospheric presures up to 133.3kPa.
