Abstract This manual for managers, engineers and students is one of the Institution of Chemical Engineers Hazard Workshop Training Modules. Contents: hazard identification and assessment; hazard and operability studies (hazop); hazard analysis (hazan); a manager's guide to hazard analysis; objections to hazop and hazan; sources of data; the history of hazop and hazan. Hazop is undertaken during the design or reevaluation of a plant or process; it attempts to identify the consequences of deviations in operating conditions. Hazan applies numerical methods and fault-tree analysis to the determination of the cost-benefit balance for proposed safety measures.
