Abstract During the development of pneumoconiosis produced by the intratracheal administration of coal-mine dust to rats, the adrenal catecholamine levels of the animals undergo phased changes. Exposure to a combination of factors of the mountain climate (mild hyperbaric hypoxia, negative ionisation of the air, ultraviolet radiation) slows the process of fibrosis, stimulates elimination of dust from the lungs and normalises sympathetic adrenal function. This suggests that removal of affected workers to a mountain climate would be an effective method of prevention and treatment of pneumoconiosis.
