Abstract A mortality study of 722 men and 320 women with at least 6 months work experience in a tannery. When compared with the overall mortality rate of their city of residence (Genoa, Italy), adjusted for sex and age, the only significantly raised cause of death was intestinal cancer (8 observed versus 4.3 expected). Overall mortality rate among the workers was actually lower than expected, probably because of the healthy worker effect.
