Title Hydrofluoric acid burns of the eye
Bibliographic information June 1983, Vol.25, No.6, p.447-450. Illus. 16 ref.
Abstract A 21 year-old man working in the semiconductor industry inadvertently poured sodium hydroxide into a container of hydrofluoric acid (HF). The worker sustained eye and face burns from the ensuing explosive reaction. Injection of calcium gluconate, the treatment recommended for HF skin burns, was ineffective because of the toxic effect and additive damage of calcium on eye tissues. Immediate single irrigation with water, normal saline or isotonic magnesium chloride solution is the most effective therapy for ocular HF eye burns.
