Abstract Micromethod developed for the accurate determination of carbon monoxide in blood samples of 100µL, using infrared absorption spectrometry. Blood is collected from an earlobe with a capillary tube. 5% of the sample is used for the determination of haemoglobin concentration with a high-precision microphotometer, which allows the result of the analysis to be converted to carboxyhaemoglobin (HbCO) concentration. The method has been tested for HbCO levels in the range of 0.5% to 100%. The technique is recommended for toxicokinetic and epidemiologic studies because of its simplicity and the possibility of on-site sampling with later analysis.
