Title Microwave cataract in radiolinemen and controls
Bibliographic information 18 Aug. 1984, Vol.2, No.8399, p.406-407. 6 ref.
Abstract 53 radiolinemen (workers who erect and maintain broadcasting towers) and 39 controls, all in Australia, had their eyes examined for the presence of posterior subcapsular lens opacities (PSC). Power density in and around the work area was also measured (it varied from 0.08 to 3956mW/cm2, with a frequency range of 558kHz to 527MHz). 21% of the linemen, and 8% of the controls, had PSC, which is thought to be an early manifestation of cataracts. It is suggested that occupational exposure to microwave radiation might be related to PSC.
